COMPETITION RULES AND GUIDELINES

Students will be registered according to grade: Division I - grades 3 and under Division II - grades 4-6 Division III - grades 7-9

Division IV - grades 10-12

First place winners in Divisions I, II and III must advance to a higher division the following year. Division IV winners may continue to compete in the same division.

Students are required to perform a solo work from memory. Any work by JS Bach is acceptable; and in 2021, the event broadens repertoire requirements to include all Baroque composers.

A single dance movement from a suite is acceptable. More than one dance movement from the same suite may also be performed.

Repertoire performed in previous years may not be used by the same student again.

In the preliminary round, judges may stop any performance which exceeds the recommended time limit:

Division I - 4 minutes Division II - 5 minutes Division III - 8 minutes Division IV - 8 minutes

In the final round, judges may stop any performance.

Adjudicators must be provided with a score. Should a score not be provided, the performer will have 10 points (one full rating) deducted from his adjudication form. Because of copyright laws, photocopied music is not permitted. Should copies be used, the performer will have 10 points (one full rating) deducted from his adjudication form.

JUDGING

All judges will be competent professionals who will receive compensation for their services. Every effort will be made to seek qualified and impartial judges.

In the preliminary round all participants will be heard and evaluated by a qualified adjudicator, and will receive a rating and score.

Superior 90-100 Excellent 80-89 Very Good 70-79 Good 60-69

Five participants in each division will be chosen to advance to the final round, which will proceed in an open concert setting. Finalists will draw numbers to determine the order of performance. Judges will be asked to rank the top two finalists in each division. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of each division.

A division with twelve or fewer entrants will have only one round of competition.
